How do you transition out of medicine? What does that look like?
Welcome back to our monthly fireside chat with a physician to get to know their journey, their joys, and their struggles with finances and outside of finances.
This show is not always about actionable content. It is however a chance for you to see behind the curtains, to walk in another person’s shoes and experience their lives.
Our next guest was kind enough to join me to discuss how CovID19 has impacted the medical practices and systems he consults with as well as to discuss lessons learned from decades as a physician.
After hanging out his shingle in a small town on the Pickney Bend of the Missouri River in 1994, our next guest and his partners leveraged one of the country’s first total-risk Medicare Advantage contracts into a regional health system which they eventually sold for $132m. After four years as an employed physician, he transitioned into a second career of helping patients by helping clinicians improve their personal and profession lives.
Please help me welcome Tom Davis MD FAAFP
In this podcast, you will discover...
- How Dr. Davis got started in medicine
- What the transition was like in hanging in shingle to becoming a multi-physician practice to the acquisition by a hospital system
- What Dr. Davis would suggest to physicians today
- How he celebrated the big pay day and what he thinks of financial freedom today!

How can a super busy physician find the time and energy to invest in real estate?
Welcome back to our monthly fireside chat with a physician to get to know their journey, their joys, and their struggles with finances and outside of finances.
This show is not always about actionable content. It is however a chance for you to see behind the curtains, to walk in another person’s shoes and experience their lives.
Our next guest was kind enough to join me to discuss how CovID19 has impacted her medical practice and of course we talk about her journey in real estate!
She has a full-time busy Family Practice in Escondido, California, and serves as the Chief Physician Officer for a physician-owned medical group of 84 providers and 12 locations.
She is passionate about building wealth and having her money work hard for her so she can spend time doing things she loves with the people she loves. After learning about real estate investments such as syndications, she has been passively investing but also founded VMD Investing to help other busy professionals. She enjoys educating and showing them the options available to accredited investors so they are also able to create a passive stream of income and break the time = money equation.
Please help me welcome Dr. Vanessa Peters!
In this podcast, you will discover:
- How her practice has been impacted by CovID19 and what they are doing to shift
- What is and what isn't passive real estate investing

Our next guest has been on the podcast--- not 1x, not 2x, now--- 3rd time is the charm!
Welcome back to our monthly fireside chat with a physician to get to know their journey, their joys, and their struggles with finances and outside of finances.
This show is not always about actionable content. It is however a chance for you to see behind the curtains, to walk in another person’s shoes and experience their lives.
Our next guest was kind enough to join me to discuss Covid19 and how it has impacted him. During the 4 years or so we've known one another, he has transitioned from residency to fellowship and now to practice.
I wanted to invite him back because he is a wealth of knowledge and has a steady head on his shoulders.
He is currently a practicing radiologist resident in Upstate New York. Throughout his medical education, he’s noticed a surprising lack of personal finance knowledge among young medical professionals, many of whom are extremely bright and talented. Hence, he created a blog, FutureProofMD.com
I can’t wait to get an update from him!
Please help me welcome back Dr. Bo Liu
In this podcast, you will discover...
- His journey from resident to fellow to practicing physician
- How his thoughts on money have changed (and have not) due to CovID19
- What he is doing for loan repayment and his plans for the future

Today, we are going to focus on physician employment contracts and chat with Jon Appino, the CEO of Contract Diagnostics.
We are going to be exploring --- how is the corona virus impacting physicians contracts???
We recorded this episode in late March 2020. So, I'm a few months behind. Things were getting pretty darn bad at the time.
There were lots and lots of questions as to how the corona virus might impact physicians and we explored each of them.
As a matter of fact, this is Jon’s THIRD time on the show. The first two times inspired the contracts section of The Young Physician’s Guide to Money & Life.
Jon is somebody who brings value each and every time he is on the podcast.
A little background on him...
Jon obtained his BS in Biology and Chemistry with a Pre-med focus. After deciding on a business career over medicine, he has spent the past 15+ years working in various sized companies and start-ups in the healthcare field. He completed his MBA in 2004 and launched his most recent company, Contract Diagnostics, in 2011. He is passionate about the education of Physicians with regards to the non-clinical (business) aspects of medicine.
What I think is pretty neat about this company is that Contract Diagnostics offers a wide range of review packages with price points starting at only a few hundred bucks with flexible payment plans for Residents and Fellows as they complete their training.
Enjoy the podcast with Jon Appino!
In this podcast, you will…
- Discover what Jon thinks about how the virus may impact existing physician contracts
- How the physician marketplace has shifted for residents and fellows
- What young physicians should be considering and asking for in their contracts
- Discover what Jon would revisit in existing contracts

Friday Jul 03, 2020
Friday Jul 03, 2020
Welcome to my first solo episode of season 5!
In this crazy time where people are hurting and dying, I've taken some time to reflect.
What money lessons have I learned this time? Did I learn my lessons from last time?
How has my attitude about money changed over time?
What would I recommend for others to do?
In this episode, you will discover...
- The 1st big lesson that I feel most everyone could be doing a better job of. I know I didn't have a large enough one of these last time around!
- The 2nd big lesson is something that I implemented several times over and I wish I had gotten started earlier
- The final lesson has to do with time. What I wish I would have done differently this time.
